This morning the Guarantor from Campania of people subjected to measures restricting personal freedom Samuele Ciambriello in Salerno presented the “Annual Report 2023” developed in collaboration with the Regional Observatory on prison life.

“The data is merciless. In Campania 1401 are drug addicts and 420 are mentally ill, demonstrating that prison is a ‘hospice for the poor'”, says Ciambriello.
In Campania, as of 31 December 2023, there were 7,330 prisoners, of which 898 foreigners and 350 women. There were 7,527 present in Campania as of 30 April 2024, of which 955 foreigners and 366 women. In the year 2023, 1,587 critical events occurred in the three penal institutions.
In particular, numerous have been reported acts of self-harm equal to 218 in the prison in Fuorni And 32 suicide attempts. And again: 1176 disciplinary infringements (23 in Eboli, 1147 in Fuorni and 6 in Vallo della Lucania), 78 hunger and thirst strikes in Fuorni and 26 isolation measures.
“I believe that everyone must do their part, we will carry out workshops inside and outside prisons – says Ciambriello – we are here to find solutions, but the first thing is to avoid overcrowding and avoid suicides.”
