“LUCKY”- PONS (LANCIA DELTA INTEGRALE) DOMINATORS IN THE “SAN MARINO” HISTORIC
Seeing historic rally cars again on the roads that made them legendary, like those of the San Marino Rally, always has a great effect. And when the winner is a great champion from a few years ago like “Lucky” Battistolli, who is still going strong and collecting European and Italian titles, with the great Fabrizia Pons at his side and the Lancia Delta Integrale, everything takes on an even more intense flavour. . Battistolli “senior” won again in San Marino, winning six of the eight special tests and despite a double rollover on the fourth test, where he left only 14 seconds. The only other 4-wheel drive at the final finish, the Lancia Delta 16V of Nicolò Fedolfi and Livio Ceci, eighth overall. “Lucky”-Pons also confirm themselves as leaders in the Italian Historic Land Rally Championship among the Four Wheel Drives.
The last special stage instead upset the standings on the podium behind the winner and between the Two Drive Wheels. Where the San Marino crew Bruno Pelliccioni-Lorenzo Ercolani now seemed firmly on the second step overall, with the Ford Escort 2000, with which they also won two special tests, before problems with the accelerator and, in the final test, a puncture, relegated it to in third place finish. Overtaken on the podium by Andrea Tonelli, with Roberto Debbi, also on a Ford Escort RS, who grabbed the place of honor by the skin of their teeth. Tonelli-Debbi also overtook the other crew fighting for the podium, Massimo Moroni-Daniele Conti (BMW 318 IS), who saw everything fall apart, with the withdrawal due to mechanical problems, after completing the last special test. Pelliccioni-Ercolani still retain the lead in the Italian Two-Wheel Drive Historic Land Rally Championship after three races.
