On Tuesday 25 June, in collaboration with the “Il cinema trovato” festival, the open-air cinema in the park of the railway Dopolavoro in Bologna welcomes the German director on the occasion of the screening of the restored version of Buena Vista Social Club. The film which in 1999 made the whole world discover Cuban music, told by its own director. Tuesday 25 June at 9.45 pm, in collaboration with the “Il cinema trovato” festival, the Arena Puccini, the historic open-air cinema in the Dopolavoro railway park (via Serlio 25/2) promoted by the Cineteca di Bologna Foundation and Ibc Movie , welcomes Wim Wenders on the occasion of the screening (in original language with Italian subtitles) of Buena Vista Social Club. The film with which the German director launched the ancient Cuban glories led by Compay Segundo into myth, has been restored by the Cineteca di Bologna, in collaboration with the Wim Wenders Foundation, to celebrate 25 years since its release.

The story is well known: a group of musicians of the Cuban tradition (among others, Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo) is brought together by the guitarist Ry Cooder (already a friend of Wim Wenders and author of the soundtrack of Paris, Texas) to create a record and a tour. Personal confessions, musical journeys, stories of real life intertwine in a splendid fresco where Wenders’ camera, with fluid and enveloping movements, captures the crystalline talent and irrepressible joy of living of these extraordinary musicians.

“I went to Havana to shoot the film, a place I had never been before,” said Wim Wenders. “All I knew was the music these old men had made, electrifying, intoxicating, infectious music. Once I saw and filmed Havana, I understood what was so special about this music: it had come out of this city. That music was the blood of this city. The place had transcended into sound, so to speak, found another form of existence in these songs. And these old people knew how to produce and reproduce that history of their place, because they had not abandoned it, like many other musicians before them who had fled the country to go to Florida, Mexico, Spain. Their sense of identity and belonging, the incredible love of their place, which had brought these old men so much pain and suffering, had also proved to be their strength and saving grace. I thought I was shooting a documentary, but instead we were there ready to witness a fairy tale that no one could have imagined.”

The Movie Reading service is active at the Arena Puccini, which allows you to listen to the audio description of the film on headphones via smartphone or tablet.
