“The Leonardo Electronics Division site must remain in Taranto”

“The site Leonardo Electronics Division it’s a little gem nestled near the Polytechnic in the Paolo VI district. Closing this plant would mean a serious loss for Taranto which would go against production diversification and, above all, the development of the advanced technology sector in our territory.”

This is what the city councilor declared Giuseppe Fiusco first signatory of a specific resolution presented by the majority which will be discussed in the city council today, Monday 24 June.

The resolution states, among other things, that the Taranto site is considered strategic for the development of software for both Italian and international military bodies. Around 170 direct and indirect workers are employed in this reality, as well as dozens of external consultancy contracts having been signed. Furthermore, these are highly qualified workers who, in the event of closure, would have to move elsewhere, causing our city to lose precious intellectual resources and, what’s more, the employment of related workers would be put at risk.

Therefore in the resolution all the majority councilors commit the Mayor and the municipal administration to immediately start a discussion with Leonardo’s top management to prevent the closure of the Taranto site and, on the contrary, to propose its relaunch through collaboration with the Polytechnic, also to sign agreements, as done in the past, with local civil bodies for the development, for example, of software for the cyber security of the Port, the Airport and local authorities such as the Municipality and the Province.

But the appeal of the majority of the Municipality is aimed at all the local institutions so that together they ask not only that the Leonardo site remain in Taranto, but also make commitments to ensure that it is relaunched, making it increasingly become a center of excellence in our city .
