The danger would therefore be real and could cause many deaths. To date we are only talking about many hospitalizations and many visits to the emergency room. But the situation could also escalate. Children, the elderly and people of all ages suffering from pathologies, especially respiratory ones, appear to be those most at risk.

However, there are small measures that we can implement to reduce the consequences of this climate phenomenon that threatens our survival. We’re talking about rains with the sand of the Sahara or suspended particles. So here is the way that seems best at the moment to deal with them.

Saharan rains in Italy: how not to be overwhelmed. The expert speaks

Increasingly frequent in our country, there are areas where their arrival is even more devastating compared to other parts of the country. The head of the simple departmental operational unit of Pneumology of the Chieti hospital, Doctor Laura Martino, has shed light on this worrying situation.

In a recent interview given to the television station Rete8, the health professional explained that the Sahara rains are certainly not a phenomenon to be underestimated. Doctor Martino invites everyone not to call that dust that remains on our cars or on the ground sand but but rather micro powders that come to us from Africa as a result of climate change.

The estimates talking about approx 180 million tons of dust which rise from the Sahara and add to the PM2.5 and PM10 already present in our country. One of the latest studies published in the scientific journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine reveals that the arrival of the Sahara rains would cause an increase in hospital admissions for respiratory diseases.

This event, in fact, can lead to Health problems such as irritation, fatigue, breathing problems and asthma. The advice to avoid all this? The best solution at the moment seems to be avoid contact with what is mistakenly commonly called Sahara sand falling from the sky with the Saharan rains.

Doctor Martino advises if necessary the use of masks to protect the airways from these micro dusts. Furthermore, it would be necessary to avoid smoking and keep under control any other respiratory diseases a person may suffer from.

If you can, therefore, Don’t be outdoors when there is a yellow, milky or gray sky because what appear to be clouds are actually micro dust. However, there is some good news: probable rainfall is expected over the weekend which would sweep away the “sand” of the Sahara.
