The Forum for environmental protection and citizens’ health of Lucca requests a meeting with Tuscany Region, Municipality of Lucca and Municipality of Capannori on the topic of road axesrequested last May 20th after the delivery of a petition with 5 thousand signatures.
“On that occasion – says the Forum – we also requested the opening of a discussion table between local authorities interested parties and the forum for the environmental protection and health of the citizens of Lucca and Piana. Unfortunately, we must point out negatively that after about a month (even if in partial exculpation, there were elections) there was no response from the Tuscany Region and the Municipalities of Lucca and Capannori”.
“The request to open the discussion table in the headquarters of the Province of Lucca or in another location is essential in order to examine our alternative proposals to the road axes about: the concrete possibility of reducing freight traffic through a surface metro with a tramway that connects the city center with the suburbs to the north, west, south, east; as well as a large-area tramway from Lucca to the Livorno freight terminal and Pisa airport; the upgrading, in whole or in part, of the three railway networks (Lucca, Florence, Viareggio- Lucca Aulla – Lucca Pisa), which have remained as they were in the last century, but which it is possible to innovate and make the trains and routes effective and modern, connecting the freight yards on the north-south route; the possibility of developing a network of electric buses and a new cycle mobility functional to citizens”.
“With the 5000 signatures collected – concludes the Forum – the signatories believe it is necessary to aim for new forms of mobility and thus avoid the construction of a wall of tar and concrete approximately 11 kilometers long from Ponte a Moriano to the entrance to the Capannori motorway toll booth . This solution, now outdated, in addition to increasing chaotic road traffic, will irreversibly pollute both the water and the air we breathe.will devastate the natural habitat of the green area located on the border between the two municipalities of the Piana, will cause enormous damage to crops and agricultural companies in the area and will make the Piana unlivable, increasing pollution from fine dust, for which we are already aware Black. We believe it is our duty to reiterate that the concept of popular participation cannot remain just a slogan written in the statutes or in some document disclosed on electoral occasions, but it must be filled with real participation, opening the discussion requested by over 5 thousand citizens. We renew the request for participation and we hope that the administrations involved demonstrate that they truly care about the fate of the Piana“.
