Como, 35 million spent and Lario not flooded and yet the lakefront is still under water. Civil Protection in action

Incredible but true: even after the storms of the night, but with the level of Lake Como which at 8am today, Sunday 23 June, was still 9 centimeters below the flood threshold (111 centimeters above the hydrometric zero compared to 120), the water from the Lario invaded practically the entire first lane along the sidewalk of Piazza Cavour.

An objectively surreal scene, given the 16 years of construction and the 35 million spent on the new promenade and the hydraulic works underground, but certainly serious.

The videos and photos you see on the page bear witness to this: even men and vehicles from the Civil Protection had to arrive to free the Como lakefront from the water and throw it back into the lake with the pumps.

In practice, to make up for – we reiterate, with the lake still well below the flood threshold – the work that the pumps under the promenade and the manhole system would most likely have had to do. And yet, when there are just over 10 days left until the total inauguration of the new lakeside promenade in Como with the attached system of manual and underground anti-flood barriers, here is a scene worthy of a few decades ago.
