2024 Healthcare Ranking, Sicily still among the worst regions in Italy

Healthcare in Italy is in difficulty: nothing new that we didn’t know. A new report by Crea (Center for Applied Economic Research) Healthcare shows that the opportunities for receiving healthcare services are not the same throughout the national territory.

In first place is Veneto, in last place is Calabria, which is very close to the Sicily region. The difference in scores attributed between the first region in the ranking and the last is decidedly large. On a positive note, the gap between North and South is slowly becoming smaller.

The Crea report has lined up data on twenty different indicators for all the Italian Regions and autonomous Provinces, to measure the “oopportunities for social and health protection offered to its citizens”. They range from access to the emergency room, vaccination prevention and specialist services carried out on time, to the quantity of people who give up treatment, the mental health index, the life expectancy of those over 65. And even the use of the health record electronic and public health spending.

The excellences, so to speak, are Veneto, Piedmont, Tuscany and the autonomous province of Bolzano. Overall, 13.3 million citizens live here: these are the Italians who on average manage to receive the best healthcare services in the country.

Immediately below there is a group of Regions with performances below 50%, however above the national average, which is 43.8%: Autonomous Province of Trento, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Valle D’ Aosta, Lombardy, Liguria. We are talking about a total of 19.3 million residents.

Then there is the group of Regions that have a performance level between 37% and 44%: Sardinia, Campania, Lazio, Abruzzo, Umbria and Puglia, which in total have 18.9 million inhabitants. Finally, the worst results are in Sicily, Molise, Basilicata and Calabria with 26%.
