In Calabria blitz on purifiers: complaints are filed

Over the last two weeks, between Scalea and San Nicola Arcella, a series of checks have been carried out on compliance with laws regarding the environment, work, food safety, protection of state-owned coastal areas and cleaning of marine waters facing the coasts. Three purifiers, four livestock farms, eleven beach establishments, a construction site, five wastewater collection tanks from as many condominium parks, a cement factory and a car wrecker ended up under the microscope. The checks led to the discovery of a series of irregularities, including a discharge of purified sewage waste with values outside the table and the compilation of the sewage sludge loading and unloading register with incomplete or inaccurate data. In some beaches, it was then discovered that the safety equipment required by a specific ordinance of the Maritime District Office of Maratea was lacking, but also that administrative offenses had been committed in the field of fishing and aquaculture, which led to the seizure of approximately 52 kg of untraceable catch; finally, hygiene-sanitary and HACCP deficiencies were highlighted which caused the closure of a room used for food storage.

Continuing the checks, in a cement factory, alleged violations of safety in the workplace and the failure to store used oils in compliant containers were revealed. Three people were also reported in a state of freedom: they are the administrator of a company that had set up a construction site for the renovation of a private home, the owner of the latter and the director of the works.

They are all charged with several violations of workplace safety regulations and for having built without specific authorizations in an area with landscape and seismic constraints. The house was also subjected to seizure. As part of this last check, the presence of three workers who were not regularly employed was also verified. Fines were imposed for a total of approximately 112 thousand euros, while in other controlled structures no irregularities of any kind emerged. Finally, sampling was carried out in three purifiers and five wastewater collection tanks to intercept any polluting flows and plan further targeted controls in the future. The activity was conducted jointly by the Carabinieri of the Calabria Legion and their colleagues from the Forestry and the Coast Guard of Reggio Calabria. In particular, the soldiers of Scalea, of the Forestry Units of Scalea and Cetraro, of the Nil (the Labor Inspectorate Units) and of the Nas (the Anti-adulteration and Health Units) of Cosenza, together with the personnel of the Maritime District Office of Maratea and with the specialist support of Arpacal staff.
