PORTOGRUARO, VENICE – A tragic event shook the Northeast along the Venice-Trieste railway line this morning. Around 7:30the discovery of a body along the tracks between the Portogruaro and Latisana stations caused the interruption of railway traffic in both directions, generating significant inconvenience.

According to initial reconstructions, a person was fatally hit by a train while sitting on the tracks. The Portogruaro Railway Police and the 118 rescuers, who quickly intervened on the spot, found that it was impossible to save the victim, who had apparently been hit by the FR 9712 regional train departing from Trieste Centrale at 6:00 am and headed for Turin Porta Nuova.

The accident caused the immediate suspension of train services on the route, with train FR 9712 stopped near Portogruaro. Trenitalia has activated a customer assistance service to manage the situation and direct passengers to the first available trains to continue their journey. Travelers coming from Venezia Mestre, as well as those departing from key stations such as Padua, Bologna Centrale AV, Roma Tiburtina and Roma Termini, were redirected to the new FR 9467 train, which departed from Venezia Mestre at 8.34am and arrived at Roma Termini to 12:00.

The authorities are conducting further investigations to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident and to identify the victim. The Venice-Trieste railway line remains one of the busiest and most strategic in north-eastern Italy, making the effects of this tragedy particularly felt among commuters and regular travellers.
