Michele Catanzaro, group leader of the Democratic Party in the Sicilian Regional Assembly (Ars), openly criticized the president of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, accusing him of wasting time in assigning political positions based on the results of the recent European elections. According to Catanzaro, while Schifani focuses on the distribution of seats, Sicily finds itself in a critical situation, characterized by numerous emergencies that require immediate interventions.
Catanzaro underlined that “the European elections are over” and invited Schifani to stop “wasting time with the balance sheet to understand which MP or which party got the most votes” and to focus instead on the urgent problems of the island. Among the main concerns highlighted by Catanzaro are the agricultural sector, described as “in agony”, and a serious water crisis that requires a rapid solution. Furthermore, with summer now upon us, Catanzaro asked what measures were planned to prevent a repeat of last year’s fire emergency.
The leader of the Democratic Party also urged Schifani to promote a constructive and timely dialogue with all parliamentary forces, in order to effectively address Sicily’s problems. “We ask the President of the Region to start a real discussion with all the parliamentary forces on the problems and emergencies of Sicily as soon as possible,” declared Catanzaro, expressing his disappointment at the political stalemate.
Catanzaro also criticized the regional government, accusing it of being paralyzed while waiting for the majority to define the internal balance on the basis of the results of the European elections. This paralysis, according to Catanzaro, is also slowing down the activity of the Sicilian Regional Assembly, preventing the adoption of necessary measures to deal with ongoing emergencies.
