Four million euros for the Bari prison, 1.5 for the penal institution for minors in Lecce And 260 thousand euros for the penal and observation pavilions in Potenza. It is the allocation foreseen by the joint committee composed of MIT and the Ministry of Justice as part of the economic commitment of 166 million euros concerning 21 prison building interventions.

The undersecretary announced it Andrea Delmastro Delle Vedove.

These are, he explains, «essential interventions for increase the accommodation capacity of the Italian penitentiary system. Prison overcrowding is tackled with penitentiary buildings and not with the usual prison-emptying measures that past governments have accustomed us to which erode the certainty of punishment, increase social insecurity and do not structurally address the issue of overcrowding. Among the other financed works are Milan San Vittore (6 million), Milan Bollate (over 8 million), Brescia-Verziano (38.8 million), Forlì (27.8 million), penal institution for minors in Triveneto, former prison of Rovigo (35 thousand euros), San Vito al Tagliamento (41 million), Quartucciu penal institution for minors (1.5 million), ⁠Poggioreale (13.9 million), Enna (1.5 million), Reggio Calabria Arghillà (11 .2 million), Pisa (450 thousand euros), Prato (1.4 million), Florence Sollicciano (497 thousand euros); Porto Azzurro (955 thousand euros); Gorgona (1.2 million), Volterra (1.3 million), Spoleto (959 thousand euros).

To these appropriations must be added a further 84 million euros for the construction of 8 detention pavilions (Civitavecchia, Rovigo, Perugia, Vigevano, Reggio Calabria, Ferrara, Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Viterbo) coming from the Pnrr. Following these interventions, it is estimated that 7 thousand new detention places will be available.
