Man dies in Castellammare hospital, his organs save 5 people

An act of extraordinary generosity was carried out by a family from Stabia, allowing the multi-organ harvesting of a 50-year-old man, who recently died at the Castellammare di Stabia hospital. The hospital’s multi-specialist team, together with the surgical teams of the recipient hospitals, participated in the delicate operation which allowed several human lives to be saved.

Intervention and Collaboration
The man, married with children, arrived at the hospital a few days ago in critical condition and died on Tuesday. Thanks to the immediate consent of the family members, it was possible to start the donation process coordinated by the Regional Transplant Center.

The specialized surgical teams, arriving from the hospitals of origin of the recipients, removed the liver, heart and kidneys. The corneas, however, were collected by the internal team of the Stabia hospital and will be delivered to the Campania eye bank.

Destination of the Organs
Liver: Destined outside the region for a waiting patient.
Heart: It will save the life of a patient from Naples.
Kidneys and Corneas: Intended for needy patients and reference facilities.
Comments from the Authorities
The general director of the ASL Napoli 3 Sud, Giuseppe Russo, expressed profound gratitude towards the donor’s family:

“It is a gesture of great civility made by this family to which, naturally, all our condolences and closeness go.”

Russo underlined the importance of the incessant work of the health company in collaboration with the Regional Transplant Center, directed by Dr. Antonio Corcione, to address the chronic shortage of organs necessary for transplantation activities.

A Gesture of Homage
Once the intervention was concluded, the staff paid homage to the donor with a bow, a symbolic gesture of respect and gratitude for the sacrifice made. This moment highlighted the importance and nobility of the gesture of donation.

Importance of Organ Donation
Organ donation often represents the only chance to improve the quality of life or even save those in critical conditions. Transplant surgery, in fact, is essential for patients who depend on dialysis machines or who desperately await a transplant to continue living.
