The Lombardy Region closed yesterday evening, Thursday 20 June, with a favorable outcome the Services Conference called for the release of the single authorization provision, aimed at the realization of the project to extend the M5 underground line to Monza, to be carried out in the Municipality of Milan, Sesto San Giovanni, Cinisello Balsamo and Monza.

“With the conclusion of the Services Conference and the release of the Single Regional Authorization Provision – he declared Giorgio Maione, Councilor for the Environment and Climate of the Lombardy Region – we have ensured a fundamental step for the project development for the purposes of the contracting out of a work which is absolutely strategic for Lombardy. We want to make our region run and offer an opportunity for sustainable mobility on one of the busiest routes in Lombardy”.

“With the construction of the extension of the line from the current Bignami terminus to Monza, the M5 line will be the first MM line that connects two provincial capitals, Milan and Monza – he explained Claudia TerziCouncilor for Infrastructure and Public Works of the Lombardy Region – The extension intervention will guarantee important new opportunities for the mobility of people in a metropolitan area characterized by a high residential density and productive activities”.

What will the extension be like?

The extension, which maintains the same infrastructural standards as the section already in operation between San Siro and Bignami, extends for approximately 12.6 km with 11 stations, up to the new terminus of the Monza-Brianza Institutional Centre, crossing the municipalities of Sesto San Giovanni and Cinisello Balsamo and the project also includes the construction of a depot-workshop in the Monza area, capable of hosting up to 60 trains. The interchange with a new terminus of the M1 line will be built at the ‘Cinisello-Monza’ station.

The total investment for the work is 1,296,000,000 euros, of which 931,000,000 coming from state resources, 283,000,000 made available by the Lombardy Region and the remaining 82,000,000 from the municipalities involved.
