Legambiente Marsala Petrosino reports: night-time waste and micro-landfill fires that threaten public health

The Legambiente Marsala Petrosino club expresses strong concern about the growing phenomenon of night-time waste fires, particularly plastic, and the uncontrolled abandonment of waste in micro landfills. These incidents represent a serious threat to the environment and public health, requiring an urgent and decisive response from the competent authorities and the community. We are witnessing a continuous increase in night-time waste fires, especially in the southern area of Marsala. These fires, mainly arson, involve highly polluting materials such as plastic, which when burned release toxic and harmful substances into the air. These emissions can cause serious respiratory problems, as well as increasing the risk of more serious illnesses in the long term. In parallel with the fires, we note a significant increase in illegal micro-landfills. These accumulations of abandoned waste, which disfigure the landscape and represent a danger to the environment. We ask local and regional authorities to intensify controls in the area to verify the origin of this plastic material, strengthening surveillance especially at night and adopting severe measures to combat these criminal phenomena. It is essential to increase the presence of law enforcement and install video surveillance systems in the most affected areas. Furthermore, we urge citizens to actively collaborate by reporting any suspicious behavior or incidents of waste abandonment to the authorities. Only through a collective commitment can we hope to stem this emergency and protect our health and our environment. It is important to report, our physical safety is at stake. Legambiente Marsala Petrosino will continue to monitor the situation, denounce and support citizens who report these phenomena to the authorities, promote awareness campaigns and clean up actions in the area, such as those already organized with schools in recent weeks. We invite all citizens to participate in the initiatives organized by our association.
