A journey through time through the Fiano di Avellino

The vertical tasting event of Fiano di Avellino from the Di Meo “Linea Tradizione” was a unique opportunity to explore the evolution of one of the most elegant white wines of Campania. The Di Meo winery has accustomed us to the longevity of whites with the “crus” that have entered history: the Fiano di Avellino Riserva Alessandra, the Fiano di Avellino Riserva Erminia, the Greco di Tufo Riserva Vittorio, which go even beyond 15 years of aging before seeing the light of the sun. The vertical of the “Tradition Line” was the litmus test of Di Meo’s long-lived whites, discovering vintages from 2022 to 2006, which once again offer an unrepeatable opportunity to understand how Fiano di Avellino develops and matures over time, revealing its many facets and its extraordinary longevity.

The richness of Fiano di Avellino, symbol of elegance and complexity

We have never stopped reiterating that Fiano di Avellino is a white wine of extraordinary complexity, capable of fascinating and surprising with every sip. Under the guise of elegance, this wine hides body and substance, characteristics that make it unique in the Italian wine scene, perfectly embodying the essence of the Irpinia area. Erminia, Roberto and Generoso Di Meo have always believed in it, since the early 1980s when they took over the reins of their parents’ historic farm in Salza Irpina, with the aim of cultivating only native varieties of Irpinia. It starts with the Fiano grapes
first two vineyards around the cellar and followed by the Montefusco and Santa Paolina areas. Four microzones with completely different soils, located at an altitude of 480 m above sea level up to 780 m.

Vintage by Vintage: a journey of discovery

2022 – The most recent vintage of Fiano di Avellino Linea Classica Di Meo presents itself with a vibrant freshness and aromatic liveliness. On the nose, notes of citrus fruits, white flowers and a hint of aromatic herbs emerge. On the palate, it is fresh, with bright acidity and a persistent finish, a sign of promising evolutionary potential. To wait.

2019 – This vintage is starting to show greater aromatic complexity. Notes of green apple, pear and citrus fruits intertwine with aromas of almond and white flowers. The structure is solid, with well-balanced acidity and a very long persistence.

2013 – With a few years of refinement, the 2013 Fiano di Avellino reveals greater depth, albeit still young. Hints of ripe fruit, such as peach and apricot, blend with floral notes and mountain herbs. On the palate it is full and enveloping, with a lively acidity that promises further development.

2006 – The oldest vintage of the vertical, the 2006 Fiano di Avellino, is a true gem of knowledge. Complex aromas of dried fruit, honey, spices, and a marked smoky nuance emerge from the glass. On the palate it is full, ripe and with a solid structure. A long and complex finish closes this extraordinary tasting experience.

Conclusion

The vertical of Di Meo’s Fiano di Avellino Linea Classica from 2022 to 2006 is a journey through time that highlights the extraordinary ability of this grape variety to evolve and improve with aging. Each vintage tells a unique story, reflecting the climatic characteristics of the year and the mastery of the Di Meo company in producing excellent wines. For wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs, this tasting represents an unmissable opportunity to explore the infinite nuances of Fiano di Avellino.

The evening was accompanied by Di Meo’s wines, the pizza prepared by Giuseppe Maglione Daniele Gourmet – Avellino, the cheeses by Paolo Amato Caseificio Aurora and the cured meats by Mario Laurino, all local excellences.
