Summer begins with strong storms: “Large hail, wind and flooding on Friday”

The summer solstice…it will be wet. It foresees it Civil Protection of the Lombardy Region which for this reason has issued an alert bulletin for Friday 21 June with risk levels up to orange.

«On the afternoon of Thursday 20th, mainly light rains are confirmed in the Alps and Pre-Alps, only locally possible in the form of downpours or thunderstorms, with greater probability in the central-western sectors – we read -. On the plain there is the possibility of local and light rain, the probability of convective activity is very low and limited to the North-Western sectors”.

All this is due to “the transit from France of a depression wave which will accompany the entry of a cold air front over Northern Italy which will be responsible, for the day on Friday 21st of a marked increase in instability and the formation of showers and thunderstorms, even of strong intensity”. In detail “precipitation will be probable already in the morning in the Western Alps and Prealps and Middle Valtellina, locally in the form of showers and thunderstorms, where a marginal involvement of the North-Western plain will already be possible in this phase. From the afternoon, a progressive increase in instability is expected starting from the West with widespread showers and thunderstorms across the Alps and Pre-Alps, followed by partial involvement of the medium and high plain sectors as well, albeit with low forecast reliability. The phenomena expected in the lower plains and the Apennines are unlikely and at most isolated. In correspondence with the most intense storm phenomena, medium-large hailstorms and strong gusts of wind will be possible. In the Alpine and pre-Alpine areas, with good probability, the convective precipitations will locally assume a semi-stationary character and persist over very limited areas: possible accumulations of up to 80-100 mm in a few hours are reported”.

With this scenario, a yellow alert will be issued from midnight across the entire Alpine, pre-Alpine and upper western plain (which includes Varesotto and Altomilanese) due to the risk of strong thunderstorms. The most intense phenomena are expected after 1pm when the alert for the area of Lake Como and the western Prealps, the Orobie Bergamo area and the eastern lakes will rise to the orange level. At the same time, starting from 6am on Friday morning, a hydraulic risk alert will also be activated.

Thunderstorms return to the Legnano area, variable weather over the weekend
