CGIL Toscana, best wishes for the 50th anniversary of the Montelupo Democratic Party: “For a future even richer in victories for workers”

We receive and publish the letter from the Montelupo Fiorentino Democratic Party to the CGIL Toscana, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the union which will be celebrated in an event on Friday 21 June at the Fornace di Sammontana, in Montelupo.

“To the kind attention of the CGIL of the CGIL Toscana of the national secretary Maurizio Landini of the regional secretary Rossano Rossi
On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of the CGIL Toscana, the Montelupo section of the Democratic Party wishes to express to you and all the members of the union our heartfelt wishes and thanks for achieving this important goal. Tomorrow 21 June we will celebrate the struggles, goals and achievements that the CGIL Toscana has achieved in half a century of activity; this day will be a precious opportunity to reflect on the past and to plan for the future, looking at the challenges that await us, and we are happy that we can spend it in a place that is a symbol of the citizen’s commitment and the union’s efforts: the Fornace di Sammontana , a historic Montelupino workplace that has now been converted.

The history of CGIL Toscana is full of battles for workers’ rights, in a context that is all too often characterized by exploitation, injustice and, unfortunately, tragedy. We still remember vividly and with full pain dramatic episodes such as the very recent death of Satnam Singh, the Indian worker who lost an arm in the fields of Latina, a concrete symbol of the inhumane working conditions to which too many workers are still subjected today. In the same way we remember the Florentine tragedy of Via Mariti, in which five innocent workers were killed on 16 February. Nonetheless, we also mention the virtuous collaboration between the union and the workers’ group of the former Gkn, who have been fighting for three years for a more just and dignified world for all. These tragic and dramatic events must motivate us to continue to fight and fight for a fairer, more humane working world, which can start again by considering the worker first and foremost as a human being.
At the same time, in recent decades, thanks to your commitment, significant progress has been made in the protection of workers. A work which, to date, risks being compromised by the current political context, characterized by nostalgic shots that we indulged in almost eighty years ago and which certainly cannot belong to this era in which we live. Your action therefore becomes doubly valuable and more crucial than ever to ensure that no steps are taken backwards with respect to acquired rights.

Friday will be characterized by numerous initiatives that will not only celebrate the past, but will also lay the foundations for the future. The presentation of the Ires Cgil research on work in Tuscany will certainly offer important points for reflection to better understand the current and future dynamics of work in our region, as also suggested by the presence of illustrious guests such as the President of the Tuscany Region Eugenio Giani. Finally, the former general secretaries of the CGIL Toscana will also be celebrated, also remembered in the panel exhibition that traces the history of the union, renewing the pure admiration for those who in the past wanted to dedicate their lives to the fight for everyone’s rights.

On this day of celebrations, the Democratic Party of Montelupo reiterates its support and closeness to the CGIL, hoping that the next fifty years can be even richer in achievements and victories for the workers of Tuscany, Italy and the world . We are certain and even more motivated to continue building a more just and supportive society, where human beings are first and foremost human.”
