Corecom Calabria: first quality prize for audiovisual films on linguistic minorities

Reggio Calabria – Corecom-Calabria, in collaboration with the Office of the President of the Regional Council, announces with great satisfaction the establishment of the “Quality Award” for audiovisual films dedicated to linguistic minorities. This initiative, the first in Italy, far from being a mere celebratory exercise, aims to promote communication and information attentive to the protection and valorization of the linguistic minorities present in the Calabria Region. These languages, in fact, not only represent local identities, but constitute the pillars of a cultural heritage that transcends the contingencies of time.

Minority languages play a fundamental role in the social and historical context of the region, bearing witness to centuries of traditions, histories and cultural exchanges. However, they are often threatened by decline, thanks to social changes, cultural homologation and the pervasive influence of globalization. “The first edition of the ‘Award of Excellence for the Best Communicative and Informational Contributions, reserved for the valorization of linguistic minorities, represents a significant step towards the objective of safeguarding them”, they jointly state Scarpino, Mazza And Oil. “The recognition and valorization of the quality of communication and information on the different Calabrian languages not only encourages the production of high-level content, but raises public awareness of the importance of these languages and the urgent need to conserve them. This commitment contributes to protecting and enhancing the precious traditions of the whole of Calabria, ensuring that they remain an essential element of our cultural identity and our common heritage.

In the opinion of the president Filippo Mancuso: “The initiative is valuable and appreciable. Calabria has three linguistic minorities (Greek, Arbëresh and Occitan) which bear witness to a past of coexistence between different peoples and cultures. A linguistic and cultural archipelago within the regional territory which to this day confirms the vitality of these communities, becoming a powerful tourist attractor for the cultural wealth, both material and immaterial, of our wonderful region. Recently the Regional Council supported a handbook on the Arbëresh community published in the Guide di Repubblica series published by the Gedi group”. The resolution of the “Regional Communications Committee” – formed by President Fulvio Scarpino, Vice President Mario Mazza and Secretary Pasquale Petrolo – establishing the Award (n. 17 of 12 June 2024, available on the Corecom website) allocates 13,500 euros for the three best films, which must be delivered by the 45th day of publication on the Corecom Calabria website. The recipients of the expression of interest are: Providers of local audiovisual and radio media services, regularly registered in the Register of Communication Operators (ROC), with registered or operational headquarters in Calabria and who offer services significantly in Calabria.
