The inconveniences we create for ourselves :: Report in Arezzo

Today I went to the post office. There were a lot of people, but I was in a hurry, I couldn’t stand there waiting for my turn, so I went straight to the counter and not only did all the people around me complain, but the operator even refused to serve me ! If you felt a little strange by what I wrote, you can understand what I felt by reading the last report from a reader who not only candidly admitted that she parks her car every day in “precarious” conditions near a school, but she also complained about the fact that every now and then, imagine, they also give her a fine! Let’s start with the obvious things: cars parked where they shouldn’t be outside schools are a great inconvenience for everyone. They are for the parents of younger children who move around with a stroller and have to dodge them every day and use the road instead of the sidewalk, but also for older children, who could already reach primary school independently, and find themselves having to take unnecessary risks. Finally, they are also an inconvenience for other motorists, who have a reduced view precisely in the place where it would be most important to have it as clear as possible. There is a problem, it is undeniable, leaving your child at school is not easy, but it only partly depends on the lack of parking; proof of this is the fact that, even where these are abundant, there is no shortage of traffic jams and people who drive their cars onto the pavement for “just five minutes”. At the same time I don’t think it’s an unmanageable problem, if there were the will. I propose some possible approaches. Traffic jams only occur shortly before the start of lessons, it is a relatively short period of time, access to certain roads could be temporarily reserved only for those taking their children to school, with barriers and staff, in order to help parents. In some municipalities, “school roads” have been created, i.e. paths that guarantee maximum safety for pedestrians near schools and prevent cars from getting too close to the entrance, instead facilitating their arrival at car parks, if available. Finally, the improvement of public transport services, which in the historic center could also be electric only, and of infrastructures, such as cycle paths and truly functional pavements, in order to provide serious and reliable alternatives to the use of the car. Certainly, leaving your vehicle where it is not permitted is not one of the solutions.
