The Future of Perugia Hospital: A Report of 2019-2024 and Future Prospects

On 18 June 2024, President Tesei responded positively to the invitation of the Perugia Hospital to participate in a meeting to present the 2019-2024 management report. The meeting took place in the Rita Levi Montalcini room of the CREO, with the presence of key figures such as the director of the Department of Medicine and Surgery, prof. Vincenzo Talesa, the councilor for health, Luca Coletto, and the regional director for health, Massimo D’Angelo.

Giuseppe De Filippis, the general director, explained the company’s progress until the first quarter of 2024, followed by the presentation of the new organizational structure of the hospital. This was achieved following the latest Memorandum of Understanding between the Umbria Region and the University of Perugia regarding the Departmental organisation, Complex Structures and Simple Departmental Structures of the Hospitals of Perugia and Terni.

The new organizational chart, which came into force on 1 June, provides for a departmental organization for the operational management of clinical governance activities based on the recognition of eight departments. These include the “Emergency and Acceptance” department, directed by Dr. Paolo Groff, the dept. of “General and Specialist Medicine”, directed by prof. Luca Stingeni, and the dept. of “General, Specialist and Oncological Surgery”, directed by prof. Auro Caraffa, among others.

De Filippis then discussed the investments, citing the large equipment installed and functioning, such as the PET CT, the remote-controlled park of endoscopic systems and devices for interventional activities.

He also mentioned the public works completed, such as the renovation of the Oncology, Pediatrics and Vascular Surgery waiting rooms, the adaptation of the helipad for daytime flights, the renovation of the entire backbone of the steam line and part of the Menghini car park. The works in progress include the creation of two pediatric stabilization beds at the Neonatology Unit, the transfer of the 118 Regional Operations Center to Via Enrico dal Pozzo, the structural adaptation of the kitchen and the helipad for night flights.

De Filippis concluded his report by recalling the actions carried out to contain overcrowding in hospital wards, such as the company and inter-company “cingolo” project, the ENT and ophthalmology fast-track path, the opening of the minor codes clinic in the emergency room and the strengthening of protected discharges to local hospitals with the strengthening of the inter-company rehabilitation process.

The morning ended with the President’s visit to some structures and services, where she had the opportunity to dialogue with the staff on duty and listen to their proposals and suggestions. This event marked an important step forward for Perugia Hospital, highlighting its ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in the field of healthcare.
