Trapani, dry dock between silences and questions

TRAPANI – Official acts, declarations, even provocations. All useless. The Region does not respond. It opposes a deafening silence on the dry dock of Trapaniowned by him. Even in the face of the new position taken by the regional deputy of the Democratic Party Dario Safina, who goes hard: “After more than a decade of waiting and unfulfilled promises, the dry dock of Trapani continues to be in unacceptable conditions. The failure to complete the renovation works made a structure of fundamental importance for our shipbuilding sector unusable.”

Il basin is the son of the entrepreneurial Region of the last century. Also of the collaboration, then unsuccessful, between public and private. The former Trapani shipyard came to a bad end and the basin returned, so to speak, to the high seas. However, it is in the sea because it is floating. And it’s not a small detail. In fact, it can easily be transferred somewhere else. I suspect he goes around the city and the industry. Pelvis that is observing, at close range, the recovery of the former shipyard area by Marinedìwhich has obtained the state concession and is equipping itself to create a nautical base. A structure available to the nautical industry from the port.

The conditions of the dry dock are alarming

What’s more, recently the owner of the company Renato Marconi reiterated his group’s interest in the dry dock (five thousand tons). He also referred to the Region and the tender that should be defined to give it under management. But the conditions of the basin are alarming. It outlines them the Honourable Safina who, in the meantime, has presented another question: “The story of dry dock is marked by a long series of problems and delays. Starting from 2019, a tender procedure was underway for the provision of goods and services necessary to bring the electrical and plumbing systems up to standard, but the tender ended in July 2021 without success due to the exclusion of the only participant .

Since, nothing concrete has been done to resolve the situation. The dem parliamentarian then refers it to 2023: “In the month of March, following an inspection by me, the regional Department for Productive Activities had announced the restoration of financial resources and the need to start a new tender procedure compliant with the new Code of public contracts. However, a year later, no tangible progress has been seen. It is unacceptable that, despite the available resources and official declarations, we are still in a stalemate situation.” Safina also thinks about the jobs that have been lost so far: “The failure to operate the dry dock, an infrastructure that in the past provided work for more than one hundred people, represents a huge loss for the local economy and for employment. We cannot afford to let this situation continue any longer.”

There is also a problem in the problem

The uncertainties don’t end there. There’s also a catch within the problem. Regional basin and former Cnt area, which will soon be a nautical base, could step on toes. A risk that ends up weakening the entrepreneurial attractiveness of the basin. Two autonomous managements could leave room for misunderstandings in the field. From here a further note from Safina: “Since 2019 we have requested the allocation of a portion of the former Trapani Shipyard to serve the basin, but despite the requests, nothing concrete has been done”. It is no coincidence that the former regional councilor for Productive Activities Mimmo Turano – now the delegation is in the hands of Eddy Tamajo, recently elected to the European Parliament – had proposed a single tender for the basin and the former CNT area. A solution that was discussed but never made any progress and that would have required an agreement between the State and the Region. At the moment, one thing is certain: “We are tired of promises and endless waiting. It is time for regional institutions to take concrete action to resolve this situation and return to the city of Trapani a vital infrastructure for our economy and our future”.

A crisis that clashes with a paradox. The port of Trapani is in great shape. The investments of the Port Authority of the system will change a lot, almost everything, and the large cruise ships that have begun to dock, disembarking tourists from all over the world, are there to act as a counterpoint. But the Region remains silent.
