Rome, 18 June. “What urgent initiatives does the government intend to take to intensify the fight against gangmastering and safeguard the health and safety of agricultural workers”. This is what Democratic Party senator Susanna Camusso is asking for in an urgent question addressed to the ministers of Labor Marina Elvira Calderone and of agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida, also signed by 13 other colleagues of the Democratic Party. In the question, the Dem senators also ask “if the government does not deem it necessary for greater coordination between the institutions and a significant increase in controls on the territory”.

“Yet another terrible accident in the province of Latina which occurred yesterday – writes Camusso in the question – where in Borgo Santa Maria a machine broke off the arm of an agricultural worker of Indian nationality, who instead of being rescued was charged , mutilated and injured, by the employer in a van and brutally abandoned on the street, is not just a canonical accident at work, but an event whose ruthlessness has reached a level that tramples on every rule of civility and respect for human dignity”.

“It seems clear that the current regulatory system is not sufficient to prevent gangmastering, a plague fueled by organized crime which requires an extraordinary effort on the part of the Executive, especially because agriculture is a strategic sector and agricultural workers, largely partly non-EU citizens, represent an indispensable workforce”.
