In Pavia the fight for the freedom of the Palestinian people does not stop. Yesterday, Monday 17 June, after a month of acampada, the pressure was brought directly to the Rectorate, where the Academic Senate was meeting.

Faced with yet another refusal not only to terminate the agreements with Israel and the recognition of the genocide, but even to take into consideration the requests brought by the students who requested the convening of an extraordinary Senate, over 50 students* went up to the premises of the Rectorate, while an equally large garrison was formed in the courtyard below.
The will is to resist to the bitter end, until the Extraordinary Senate is scheduled.

This point was reached after the rector Svelto denied any form of official interlocution with the acampada for 4 weeks, maintaining a rigid yet complicit political position.
Refusing to recognize the massacre of the Palestinian people as genocide and protecting any form of collaboration agreement with universities and companies involved in the production of armaments is, in fact, a precise choice of field, despite the repeated and empty declarations of empathy towards the population of Gaza and of the statements, which have so far remained only on paper, regarding the possible opening of humanitarian corridors for students and academics.

Since yesterday, a new phase has opened, initially based on threats of expulsion from the university and criminal trials against the students in the Rectorate’s office, by the governance and conducted in a moment of stalemate today with the smartworking of the workers present in the building.
In this way, the rector would like to nullify the pressure and struggle, avoiding, for the umpteenth time, taking a position by granting the Academic Senate.
The convening of the Senate on a Gaza theme would in fact require barons and governance to express a clear and public positioning. In the corridors there were rumors that it would be embarrassing to speak out against student motions and therefore it would be better not to talk about it at all and choose the path of the Verrucoso.

In this city which depends for a considerable part of its income on the presence of university students, we ask ourselves how much their voice is really worth. Do they only matter when it comes to paying tuition or do they have the right to express a critical point of view and at least be listened to?
Currently, the sensitivity of young people is very high and UniPV’s Pilates choices could lead many students to choose to train elsewhere.

We don’t like stalemate, we don’t like waiting and we want to send back to the sender the forced option of the fight of attrition, a unilateral choice of the Rector who is in all respects our counterpart in this battle. The Rector hopes to hide the dust under the carpet, convinced that the mobilization will sooner or later deflate.

We believe it is necessary to break the lines and shuffle the cards, generate confusion by choosing a strategy that can, for the umpteenth time this month, catch the counterparty off guard, forcing it to take a clear position. Make it clear that the voice of students at university and in the city matters, has weight and must be considered.
Reject playing roles in a chess game predetermined from above.
