EssilorLuxottica goes renewable: it will create an innovative solar park – Pescara

CITY OF SANT’ANGELO. EssilorLuxottica goes renewable by creating a solar park in Città Sant’Angelo considered innovative for its overall power of 20MW. 40 hectares of industrial land around the Barberini plants have been recovered and reconverted to accommodate, in addition to the plant for the production of renewable energy, also food crops for the factories. The solar park in the province of Pescara will be the first large ground-mounted photovoltaic plant built and managed directly by EssilorLuxottica and will be able to generate approximately 30,000 MWh of clean energy per year, equal to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 10,000 families. The plant is expected to be directly connected to the Barberini production site to maximize self-consumption of the energy produced on site. In short, the objective is to create a new model of industrial sustainability in Abruzzo.

“With these initiatives we continue to realize the vision of EssilorLuxottica, a group that, while achieving extraordinary results on the markets, develops its plan of important investments in sustainability and for an ethical and responsible approach. Today we add another important step to continue improving our energy efficiency globally and to achieve carbon neutrality of all our activities around the world by next year, in line with the ambitions of the Eyes on the Planet sustainability programme”, commented Francesco Milleri, president and CEO of EssilorLuxottica.

Tiziana Magnacca, regional councilor for productive activities, industrial research and work, was satisfied: “Ours is an Abruzzo that produces quality and manages to grow in all manufacturing sectors through the commitment and creativity of shrewd and far-sighted entrepreneurs. One of these excellences, Barberini spa for the production of sun and prescription lenses and part of the EssilorLuxottica group, a high quality company and a global point of reference in this sector, is investing in Abruzzo to strengthen its position. Abruzzo proves attractive and competitive also for its excellence. As the Department of Productive Activities, with the guidance of President Marco Marsilio, we intend to do everything within our competence to stand alongside those who continue to believe in our territory and intend to invest. In this way, employment can be increased with the use of technologies and the quality of production, always having sustainable, modern and innovative development as a reference.”

Engineer Gianni Vetrini, former CEO of Barberini, said he was “very proud to see how the company that I led for many years and with which I still have the pleasure of collaborating continues to grow both in terms of volumes and in job creation. Barberini, in fact, today produces around 12 million pairs of optical glass lenses per year thanks to a strong vocation for automation supported by the contribution of highly qualified and trained personnel on site. In this sense, being part of an international group that is a leader in the sector has allowed us to continue investing in Barberini and its unique characteristics of innovation and quality, while at the same time making it an excellence also in the field of sustainability. For years the company has been practicing a policy of attention to construction materials, energy efficiency and water recovery and with this innovative project also open to the population it takes a further and decisive step forward in this direction. All this takes place in a region, Abruzzo, which once again confirms itself as attentive and at the forefront also on issues related to the ecological transition”.
