Jazz marathon in Siena to remember Franco Caroni

On June 22nd the whole world of jazz and music will look to Siena and that panoramic corner of the Orti Tolomei. On the occasion of the celebration of the European Music Festival 2024, Siena Jazz in collaboration with the Associazione Jazzistica Senese and the Contrada della Tartuca, presents a concert marathon at the Orti dei Tolomei in memory of its historic founder Franco Caroni, who died prematurely at the beginning of this ‘year.

“We remember with great affection and gratitude the man who contributed to making the history of Italian Jazz a legend with the strength and stubbornness with which he chases a great dream, making the City of Siena one of the main international capitals of jazz music”, says the president of Siena Jazz Massimo Mazzini.

The event will begin in the afternoon at 5pm, with the participation of three musical ensembles from three European conservatories, in memory of the international cooperation programs always strongly promoted by Franco Caroni. The performances will be the result of an intensive educational program which will host three prestigious European musical academies in Siena from 18 to 22 June, namely Dublin City University, Estonian Academy of Music and Theater of Tallinn, Escola Superior de Música and Artes do Espetáculo of Porto, accompanied by their teachers, Ronan Guilfoyle (Dublin), Ruben Talen (Tallinn), Paulo Perfeito (Porto) and Francesco Fiorenzani (Siena).

The project, supported through the Italian Ministry of Culture, the contribution for the support of projects aimed at promoting jazz music, and by the Erasmus+ Programme, sees the participation of teachers and students of the guest Conservatories who in collaboration with the best students of Siena Jazz they will discuss creative improvisation and the construction of joint repertoires.

The concert event in memory of Franco Caroni will continue with the concert at 9pm by the quartet made up of Francesco Bigoni on saxophones, Stefano Battaglia on piano, Gabriele Evangelista on double bass and Mattia Galeotti on drums, there will then be space for the free surprise participation of the guests including Maurizio Giammarco, Ettore Fioravanti, Achille Succi, Furio Di Castri, Greg Burk, Ferruccio Spinetti, Silvia Bolognesi to conclude with the Siena Jazz University student orchestra directed by Roberto Spadoni, who, with solo guests, will pay homage on stage to the founder of the Sienese Academy.
