Today, the quiet ring road of Novara was the scene of an event that left motorists and residents stunned: one sheep of considerable size, estimated at around 40 kilos, burst onto the roadway towards Mortara, triggering an unusual “urban rodeo” and temporarily paralyzing traffic in the area.

The accident began around 10 am, when reports from disbelieving drivers began to reach traffic police and traffic control centers. Eyewitnesses describe the scene as surreal: the sheep, visibly scared but determined in its unusual wandering, caused a progressive slowdown in traffic along the ring road. Bewildered motorists suddenly found themselves negotiating an unexpected living obstacle between the lanes, while others stopped to witness the animal’s unusual “performance”.
The intervention of the police was rapid and coordinated. The Flying Squad of the Novara Police Headquarters was promptly deployed to the site of the accident to manage the situation and guarantee the safety of all traffic participants. Officers immediately blocked traffic along the ring road, avoiding potential road safety risks and establishing a security perimeter around the errant sheep.
What followed was a relentless media hype, with motorists and spectators attempting to help catch the runaway sheep. Some tried to block the animal with improvised vehicles, while others tried to approach on foot. Despite the risks, the atmosphere was characterized by an unexpected dose of solidarity and humor, with many present joking about the “new highway danger” that was entertaining the city.
After several unsuccessful attempts, the animal was finally calmed and successfully immobilized by traffic police experts. Using safe and effective animal control techniques, the sheep was promptly loaded into a specially equipped service vehicle and transported safely to the nearby town of Galliate. Here, veterinarians and local officials stabbed the animal to establish its identity and establish its origin.
