There seems to be no peace in the regional prisons of Campania. The report was made by the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union through the regional secretary Tiziana Guacci.
A first serious episode occurred on Saturday afternoon at the Salerno Prison where a prisoner of the section ex article 32 has started a fire in his room of overnight stay. The supervisor and observation officer of the section immediately noticed that the cameras were not viewable due to a blanket of black smoke and immediately raised the alarm. Only thanks to his intervention and the General Surveillance and the other police officers who intervened, the inmate, who had barricaded himself inside the bathroom of the detention room, was made safe. They were later found under the mattress, which had been set on fire, a piece of ceramic of considerable size and the foot of the table, in addition to the grate placed above the entrance barrier of the desoldered cell. The same inmate returned to his overnight room late in the evening and continued to create confusion.
Also in Salerno prison, yesterday morning, there was one scuffle between prisoners located in the promiscuous protected section. In the afternoon, however, the same inmate who had previously started the fire in his overnight room started a protest by banging on the railings and reporting that he wanted to change cells. The police tried in vain to bring the prisoner back to calm; they subsequently made him leave the cell to take him to the parking room, discovering that he had some stones with him. Once in front of the parking room the inmate resisted by refusing to enter and suddenly he a Superintendent who intervened was attacked with slaps and kicks.
Guacci underlines that the situation does not improve in other prisons, such as in Avellino, for example, where other critical issues have occurred: “Sappe expresses its appreciation to the Penitentiary Police personnel serving at the prisons of Salerno and Avellino – says the trade unionist – and hopes that the units involved in the events will be given a fair and deserved reward. We ask without delay for the transfer out of the region of the prisoner responsible for the serious violence carried out at the Salerno prison. The cry of alarm and the request for urgent interventions to restore legality in Campania prisons, ensure safety within the detention departments and finally restore serenity to Penitentiary Police personnel who continue to work in undignified conditions”.
“We need to intervene quickly to protect the prison officers, the pride not only of the SAPPE and of the entire Corps but of the entire nation – highlight Donato Capece, general secretary of SAPPE -. SThe presence of the State emerges, strong and evident, and cannot tolerate this widespread impunity and they serve urgent and effective measures. We appeal to the leaders of the DAP to create the conditions to restore order and security, truly implementing zero tolerance towards those violent prisoners who, even in prison, are convinced that they can continue to commit crimes with absolute impunity”.
