Europeans: instead of questioning abstentionism, they celebrate presumed successes

Benevento

“At the conclusion of the recent round of European elections, all the political forces in the field should have reflected on the dramatic nature of the data relating to voter turnout, which in Italy recorded a sharp decline compared to the last European elections in 2019 with a loss of over 6 points percentages – on the national figure – went from 56.13% to 49.58% of those entitled”.

The UDC Provincial Commissioner of Benevento Antonio Verga starts from here and continues: “The figure for the fourth constituency, the Southern one, appears even more problematic, where turnout dropped to 43.72%.

Faced with such disheartening data, indicative of a strong disaffection among citizens towards participation in the vote, the political forces, instead of asking themselves why young people do not go to vote with the first party to become that of non-voting, politicians have not found better than proposing – from 11 June to today – only press conferences and press releases to inform local, regional and national newspapers of their real or presumed successes. In fact, those who claimed victory were precisely those political forces which, despite being soundly beaten having not even received representation in the European Parliament, having failed to exceed the minimum threshold of 4% nationally, rejoiced boldly as if they had won the “Nike” trophy. of Winged Victory”.

In the meantime, not even a word has been said about the age-old problems that afflict the development of our Samnite province, all of which remain unresolved to this day! Let’s think about the dramatic situation of the healthcare system in which our province finds itself, starting from the city hospital, the very serious problem of the demedicalisation of ambulances, the poor inefficiency of the Cerreto Sannita hospital, the urgent healthcare needs of the citizens of the Caudina Valley with the feared weakening of the hospital of Sant’Agata De’ Goti, and so on. Not to mention the crux of the infrastructure system. How is it possible to block the attempt to divert the water of the Campolattaro dam out of our province while only the risks and potential seismic dangers of the Tammaro water barrier structure remain in the territory?

What can we say about the almost biblical times of the failure to double the motorway junction for Caianello, of the need to reconnect the road network towards Puglia, Molise and Lazio, without wanting to talk about the fable of the purification plant in the city of Benevento, of the failure to make the area safe of Pantano at risk of flooding since 2015 and not least the state of degradation of the Cellaraulo green park or the unfinished state of the three tunnels in via Avellola since the Pietrantonio era? There are many issues on the table and the UDC – as is its style – will address these topics together with the citizens with a constructive and collaborative spirit for the development of the Samnite territory, trying to make a serious and concrete contribution to the solution of the problems that currently they block the economic, employment, cultural and social growth of internal areas. So while the others dedicate themselves to reflecting on how to remedy their political survival, the UDC will not helplessly assist the slow and inexorable agony of the Sannio and its citizens”.
