Proton therapy in Trento, compared experiences

TRENT. Three years after the first edition, the «Trento Proton Beam Line Facility» workshop returns. The event will be an important opportunity to present and discuss the research activities carried out in recent years in the experimental room of Trento proton therapy center, a highly specialized structure of the provincial health services company dedicated to preclinical activity, and beyond, which uses sophisticated and innovative proton technology. The workshop will be held next
June 17th and 18th in the Kessler Room of the Department of Sociology of the University of Trento and is organized by TIFPA (Trento Institute for Fundamental Physics and Applications).

Clinical activities are supported at the Trento proton therapy centre to scientific research of national and international importance carried out in the clinical, preclinical and radiobiological fields. The preclinical research activity is carried out in a dedicated experimental room, equipped with two fixed lines for the release of the proton beam, which is also used for research and development projects in the field of basic physics and materials and applications aerospace. These activities are mainly promoted by TIFPA, the national center of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), created thanks to the collaboration with Apss, the University of Trento and the Bruno Kessler Foundation.

The «Trento Proton Beam Line Facility» workshop therefore aims to collect the research experiences on the proton therapy front developed in recent years in the Trento Center with the aim of identifying a common vision of the activities currently in place and encouraging collaborations and synergies between the research groups that have common interests. A particular focus will be dedicated to recent scientific developments in the field of detectors for medical, space and other scientific applications (e.g. radiation hardness), and in the field of radiobiology. The two days in Trento will then be an opportunity to reflect on the future opportunities offered by the Proton Therapy Center and to discuss the potential improvements of the structure, which would allow the pool of users and experimental activities to be further expanded.
