TREVISO – Three of hers athletes at the Paris Games. It is an expedition of absolute prestige that the Fencing Treviso maestro Ettore Geslao will send to the next ones Olympics and Paralympics: Giulia Rizzi And Mara Navarria in the sword and Matteo Dei Rossi in the Paralympic epee and sabre. «We always said to ourselves: who knows if one day there will ever be one of our representatives at the Olympics. Well we will have three at once: it’s an enormous pride”, smiles Andrea Sirena, president of the Viale Vittorio Veneto association. Before taking to the platforms of the Grand Palais, however, from tomorrow Rizzi and Navarria will be involved in the appetizer of the European championships in Basel, Switzerland.

Both natives and residents of Udine, like the vast majority of top Italian fencers they have a double membership: both for a military sports group – one for the Fiamme Oro of the Police, the other for the Army – and for a “civil” society in the area, precisely the Treviso club. Here they train between a competition and a training camp with the national team. Giulia Rizzi has chosen to base itself in the capital of the Marche since last summer. And you can’t say that it didn’t do her any good. At 35 (she will be on Thursday) the Friulian swordsman is living there best season of his career: a victory in Nanjing in the World Cup and two second places in the Grand Prix (the races with increased points) in Doha and Calì. Last seal: the triumph at the Italian championships, a week ago in Cagliari. Results that could not fail to be worth it first call at Cinque Cerchi for the individual women’s sword competition, together with Rossella Fiammingo and Alberta Santuccio, on 27 July (among other things, the inaugural event of the fencing program).

For Mara Navarriainstead, it will be there third Olympic participation and, at 38 springs, probably the last one too. For this reason there is a hint of disappointment for the choice of the city Dario Chiadò to field it Alone in the team competitionwith her three companions. The experience of the mother from Udine, who has been attending the hall of the Coni building for three years already, could, however, be very useful to the Italians on 30 July: in the wake of two golds and a silver in the five stages of the 2023-24 Cup, the quartet Italian aims decidedly high.

PARALYMPICS

Also Matteo Dei Rossi will be at debut at the Paralympics, scheduled from 3 to 7 September again in the French capital. L’athlete from Treviso will pull in the spade and in the individual saber, as well as with the epee team (for his other weapon, there is no team event). In turn he presents himself with a very respectable business card: four medals at the European Championships last March and above all the success (second of the season), at the end of May, in the World Cup sword competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil, beating the British Gilliver, number one in the ranking and one of the phenomena of the specialty.

THE EVENING

The three blues were the stars of the event evening organized by Scherma Treviso at the Santa Caterina auditorium last Friday. Also wishing them good luck mayor Mario Conte: «You and the other young people present are an example – he told them – Sport is also and above all sacrifice, commitment, dedication, passion: qualities that make us better men, women, citizens». And, without superstition, he hoped: “Bring us a medal”. Behind the Olympians and Paralympians, however, there is a movement of 160 members who, under the guidance of the masters Francesca Dalessandri and Filippo Cesaro in foil and Flavio Puccini, Davide Cenedese and Roberto Simeone in epee, have also collected various titles and even more numerous placings at youth and absolute level, at regional and national levels. While awaiting the future move to the new headquarters in the former Salsa barracks, the company named after the legendary maestro Geslao has also established a collaboration with Lilt to encourage, through fencing, the rehabilitation of women who have undergone breast cancer surgery.
