“Mayor don’t forget us”

“The new mayor Massari and the future council must not forget us”. A desperate appeal that eight months later the residents of via Emilia San Pietro and the area around via Giorgione are once again shouting out loudly. Already last October they had sent a letter to the Municipality, the police station and the newspapers complete with a collection of signatures to denounce degradation and crime under the arcades. “At the beginning of December we met the councilor for legality, Nicola Tria. They promised us a quick clearing of the bivouacs, but above all the introduction of a ‘neighbourhood watch’ and the implementation of cameras. For a month and a half the situation had improved, with more police traffic. We thought we had made it but now perhaps everything is worse than before, also because nothing of what was promised has been achieved”, say the bitter residents.

“There is a large group of people who continue to loiter under the arcades, drinking alcohol all day and disturbing passers-by – explain the spokespersons of the city committee – Fights are now the order of the day. We call the police order that then arrive, identify the subjects by taking their documents, but then everything goes back to the way it was before. We can’t do it anymore.”

Then they point out, accompanied by a series of photographs taken by the inhabitants of the neighborhood through which they document everything: “These people are mainly stationed in front of the Pam Local supermarket where customers are now discouraged from going, also because they lie down on the racks and no one bothers to put their bicycles there. They stock up on alcohol in a local bar and in the fruit and vegetable minimarket next to the Pam. They shout until the evening, they sell drugs and even food items such as bits of Parmigiano Reggiano which we assume are stolen exhausted.”

An SOS that they reiterate, asking for help from politicians. Furthermore, during the electoral campaign, the mayoral candidates had been right under the porticoes of Via Emilia San Pietro, accompanied by the ‘Migliora-Re’ association made up of traders from the historic center who organized ‘a walk’ to show them the criticality of the hexagon. And they had been catechized right on this segment of pavement where they were able to see with their own eyes the bivouacs and the degradation. Now the ball passes to the Administration.
