The conference “Beyond therapy. Non-pharmacological treatments in dementia”.
The conference promoted by Chiara Savà, coordinator of the “Così come sei” day center, professional educator, music therapist, professional counselor and Aba behavior technician, placed the theme of social prescription at the center.
In fact, from the conference it emerged that every three seconds in the world a person is diagnosed with dementia, but the drug cannot be the resource to deal with the problem, which is why other therapeutic models that go further are needed.
“Even our city – explained Chiara Savà – can become an Alzheimer’s-friendly community. This is why we are evaluating how it is possible to start the practice of social prescription, a protocol of crucial importance for the community which is faced with the proliferation of dementia which is increasingly widespread in our society today and which, for this reason, needs to be helped considering that family members and patients need to be followed not only pharmacologically but also with therapies that do not use medicines and which today the WHO includes in its guide, recognizing them as rehabilitation paths.”
Chiara Sara in her speech underlined the need to activate a path that goes beyond pharmacological therapies in Ragusa too.
Synergy is key in this industry
Mayor Peppe Cassì was also present at the opening of the meeting. The speakers’ interventions were moderated by the Equal Opportunities Councilor, Elvira Adamo, who highlighted, for her part, that “the social prescription involves creating a network around the person who suffers from Alzheimer’s or senile dementia to support and support him , but on the other hand, make her stay at home obviously protected so as not to uproot her from her family and living context. I was invited to promote this service also in the city of Ragusa. Naturally, synergy is essential to ensure that this model can be implemented. We cannot be monads, no one saves themselves, to paraphrase a famous title. Only networks, collaboration between institutions, non-profit organizations and civil society allow us to achieve results in support of the most vulnerable people”.
