It was a real shock when the body of the surfing legend was found Tamayo Perry, also known to have participated in the film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. At just 49 years old, his mutilated body was found off the coast of Hawaii without a leg and an arm.

The terrible accident

The terrible tragedy occurred on Sunday 23 June Goat Island, an island off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii. According to information reported by the local press, the surfer was riding the waves, as he did every day, when he was allegedly attacked by a shark who made him fall from the table and then attacked him, causing deep wounds and completely severing an arm and a leg.

Having spotted the body, Tamayo was rescued with a jet ski which brought him back to shore where an ambulance was waiting for him but was only able to confirm his death. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said Perry was found dead around 1 p.m. Sunday.

Who was the surfer

Perry was a true institution in Hawaii. Born in Oahu, he became famous for his performances at Pipeline, one of the most famous surfing locations in the world. In particular, his ability to surf tubes (inside the waves) became famous everywhere. He had also won a prestigious award in 1999 Pipe Masters Trials and he was always present in specialized magazines in the sector as one of the most iconic characters.

Due to his skills in the water he had often been called for some appearances in films such as Blue Crush in 2002 and again in the fourth episode of the series The borders of the seain Lost, Hawaii Five-0 and the most recent Pirates of the Caribbean. After an accident with a surfboard where he suffered a significant head injury, he left the world of competition to dedicate himself to teaching surfing and also to beach safety.

A legend

His passing has left a deep void in the community where Tamayo was well known and loved. The mayor of the town Rick Blangiardi asked fans to respect the privacy wishes of Perry’s family and dedicated heartfelt words to the surfer. “Tamayo’s death is a tragic loss. He was a legendary sailor and a highly respected member of our ocean safety team.

It’s really hard to imagine.”

In the meantime, the surrounding sea area has been closed for safety. Perry would be the first surfer to die from a shark attack, although such incidents are very common.
