500 participants for the event

It is the cultural initiative of the moment in the province, an event that will bring in Acerra tens of thousands of visitors and which has the ambition of encouraging the transformation of the way of life in the Neapolitan hinterland. The Assault on the Castellor, a grand re-enactment of the battle which pitted the Aragonese of King Alfonso V against the Angevins and local feudal lords of Count Gorello Origlia in November 1421, began on Saturday with the setting up of the “besiegers” camp in the moat of Castello dei Conti, visited yesterday by a crowd of curious people.

And today the event continues, in the afternoon, with the ancient knights’ carousel, set up in the municipal villa in via Manzoni, limited for the occasion with entry limited, for safety reasons, to 1900 people.

The historical re-enactment, which sees involved 500 figures in late medieval military clothes and uniforms, obviously equipped with everything, period armor and weapons, spears, swords, arquebuses, cannons and catapults, will culminate on Saturday 22 June with the parade of neighborhood flag-wavers and finally, on Sunday evening 23, with the re-proposal of the actual siege, that is, when Piazza Castello it will be organized in such a way as to be able to accommodate a maximum number of 4800 people. So, it’s basically two weeks of a time machine. A notable operation of historical reconstruction which has been renewed for years now, made possible by the proven collaboration between the Campania Region, Metropolitan City and Municipality of Acerra.

«The event of the assault on the Castle – explains the president of the Acerra municipal council, Raffaele Lettieri, former mayor of the city from 2012 to 2022 – puts positive energy into circulation and the whole city feels involved. Thanks to the economic contribution of the Campania Region and the Metropolitan City of Naples we are able to renew the cultural promotion and valorization of the historical-artistic heritage.” «We are increasing the attractive and tourist capacity of this area», adds the mayor, Tito d’Errico.

The Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the metropolitan area of Naples has in fact announced a new excavation and restoration campaign in the archaeological area of Suessula, the ancient Oscan, Etruscan and Roman city located in the Calabricito woods, next to the Casina Spinelli, border with Caserta. «Our main objective – declares the superintendent Mariano Nuzzo – is to make this precious heritage accessible. Here we have already brought to light other finds which will be cleaned and restored.”
