The Lions Reggio Calabria Host awards the Golden Bergamot to Prof. Mario Zappia

In the prestigious Mons. Ferro Hall of the Metropolitan City building, located in the central Piazza Italia in Reggio Calabria, yesterday Friday 14 June, he delivered the Golden Bergamot Award 2024.

The prestigious recognition is conferred by Lions Club Reggio Calabria Host since 1960 to those who were born in Reggio Calabria and who have distinguished themselves for the excellence of their works, for the importance of their initiatives, or for the fame of their personality.

This year the coveted statuette was awarded to Prof. Mario ZappiaDirector of the Neurological Clinic of the “Vittorio Emanuele” University Hospital of Catania, designated for the two-year period 2025 -2027 President of the Italian Society of Neurology. This was communicated by the President of the LC Host Wanda Albanese De Leo and the President of the Prize Commission Arturo De Felice.

Professor Zappia was born in Reggio Calabria on 3 October 1957. After graduating with honors and subsequent specialization in Neurology, Professor Zappia completed his studies in the United States of America. In 2004, having moved to the University of Catania, over time he held the role of Head of the Catania Section of the Institute of Neurological Sciences of the CNR, Director of that school of specialization in Neurology, Director of the Department of Neuroscience, and many other prestigious positions such as, among the most recent (2020/2022), that of President of the Italian Parkinson and Movement Disorders Society.

His scientific interest has mainly focused on the study of Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy and neuropathies.
