MESSINA – More than historical courses and appeals. In this case, it is an eternal return and nothing changes. In the northern Riviera area, and beyond, you can’t sleep in the summer because of the music in the clubs. The nightlife in Messina continues to disturb the sleep of many people. But no demonization of fun. A citizen, who shot a video, says it clearly: “I think that young people should have fun and locals should work. But this must happen while respecting the right to rest of us who live in Sant’Agata and in general in the northern area. The problem is that the decibels must be controlled. Let’s be clear, the clubs near my house do not play music beyond the hours permitted by the ordinance, but it should be checked whether they exceed the permitted volume of sounds. And we are convinced, from the type of noise, that they do. This means that we cannot sleep and that we feel invaded by this music. I live on the third floor and I have to close everything, a prisoner of the air conditioners, to try to resist the invasiveness of the noise until late.”
According to Mayor Basile’s ordinance, “the organization of musical entertainment evenings is permitted, without invitation to dance, from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9.00 pm to 00.30 am”. And again: from Tuesday to Sunday, “for public entertainment venues equipped with a public safety license pursuant to art. 68 Tulps (Consolidated law on public safety laws), the organization of dancing evenings is permitted from 9.00 pm to 02.30 am. From Tuesday to Sunday, background music is permitted in all public establishments.” Music that doesn’t disturb.
The importance of noise pollution controls
The lady insists: “Last year ARPA, the regional agency for environmental protection, carried out a check regarding decibels, and we would like to know the outcome. As a condominium, we have submitted a request for access to the documents. In general, I repeat, the appeal is to have fun and, as far as managers are concerned, to work without disturbing anyone. Soundproof the rooms, place the speakers on the sea side, don’t exaggerate with the volume, carry out constant checks: all this is possible. And it’s called civilization.”
Another Messina nightlife is possible
Let us make this person’s appeal our own. A balance must be found. Obviously it is not clear from the video whether the permitted noise limit was exceeded. But precisely for this reason it becomes essential that checks are carried out with phonometric measurements, in order to monitor noise pollution. Many of us often come across, in different parts of the city, annoying noises, a mix of fireworks and very loud music.
Sticking to the rules and respecting everyone shouldn’t be a utopia. Another one nightlife in Messina, without trampling on anyone, is possible. It has to be.
