The Round Hazelnut becomes the object of study at the UMG of Catanzaro

There Calabria has many excellences but, to enhance them, we need work, passion, good ideas and a synergistic path between public and private. That’s what’s happening to Cardinale with the Round Hazelnut from Calabria. For the product, among the symbols of the Calabrian territory, a was created innovative projectwith the aim of knowing its potential in depth.

The Municipal Administration has entrusted, through a public procedure, to the Center for Research and Advanced Services for Rural Innovation (CRISEA), chaired by Stefano Alcaro, professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and president of the Master’s Degree Course in Pharmacy atMagna Graecia University of Catanzaro. The results of this process were illustrated during a well-attended and very interesting conference.

The following spoke: the Agriculture Councilor of the Calabria Region, Gianluca Gallo; the president of the Regional Council, Filippo Mancuso; the regional councillor, Antonello Talerico; the president of the Province of Catanzaro, Amedeo Mormile; the rector of UMG, Giovanni Cuda; the mayor of Cardinale, Danilo Staglianò; the mayor of Torre di Ruggiero, Vito Roti; the president GAL Serre, Martial Battle; the president of the Consortium for the Valorization and Protection of the Calabrian Hazelnut, Giuseppe Rotiroti; the rup of the Bando Borghi project of the municipality of Cardinale, Antonio Nistico.

Renowned experts spoke: the ethnobotanist Carmine Lupia he spoke about the ethnobotanical aspects of the hazelnut; Isabella Romeo from the UMG of Catanzaro illustrated the chemical characteristics and studies on the anti-inflammatory activity of Tonda di Calabria; Raffaella Boggia and Federica Turrini from the University of Genoa presented the preliminary results on the chemical-bromatological characterization of the hazelnut and on the valorisation of some of its by-products; Sonia Bonacci of the UMG dealt with residual analyzes of pesticides and heavy metals.

Followed by a round table with Vincenzo Mollacecoordinator of the Doctorate in Life Sciences at UMG; Raffaella Boggia of the University of Genoa, Alberto Stattipresident of Confagricoltura Calabria and member of the national executive council of Confagricoltura e Joshua Costacurator of the project, municipal councilor of Cardinale and teacher of Food Chemistry at UMG.

“The Municipality of Cardinale – explained the mayor Danilo Staglianòhas chosen to allocate part of the funds obtained through the Call for Borghi of the Calabria Region to research on the prized Calabrian hazelnut because we are convinced that these initiatives can be a driving force for the territory”. Hhighlighted Joshua Costa: “politics must look at the territory and, from this perspective, a profitable synergy has been created involving the University and research”.

“We are very satisfied – he underlined Stefano Alcaroof the multidisciplinary study that was carried out. The importance of scientific research in enhancing local resources and therefore generating wealth for an entire region was understood. We hope that this approach can be explored in greater depth in relation to other Calabrian gastronomic excellences.”

“Regarding the round hazelnut from Calabria, we don’t want to stop here, we intend to create a scientific publication on the subject, convinced that the story, the wide-ranging communication, is fundamental to spread, stimulate, attract the attention and interest that this extraordinary region deserves.” The event, part of the training activities of the Doctorate in Life Scienceswas sponsored by the Magna Græcia University of Catanzaro.
