Nico Pepe International: this is the name chosen by the Nico Pepe Civic Academy of Dramatic Arts of Udine to represent the international vocation that characterizes the summer 2024 eventsstarting with the contemporary dance masterclass held by Carolyn Carlson from 20 to 22 June, and then continuing with the Safest – Summer Academy Festival from 16 to 20 July.

At the end of the masterclass, Saturday 22 June at 6pmCarolyn Carlson will hold an open work session which the public will also be able to attend: it is a surprise event, offered by this extraordinary artist who will be supported by the dancer Sara Orselliwith the musical accompaniment of Paki Zennaroalways alongside the artist in his masterclasses.

Who is Carolyn Carlson.

Born in California, Carlson defines herself above all as a “nomad”. From the San Francisco Bay Area to the University of Utah, from the Alwin Nikolais company in New York to the Paris Opera, from Venice to Helsinki, Carolyn Carlson is a tireless traveler, always on the lookout for seeks to develop and share his poetic universein fact, to the definition of choreographer she prefers to use “poésie visuelle” which describes her work of creating suggestions in movement, incessantly continuing her artistic research.

Over the course of his career, Carolyn Carlson has created more than 150 playsmany of which are important pages in the history of dance, from “Density 21.5” to “The Year of the Horse”, from “Blue Lady” to “Steppe”, from “Writings on Water” to “Inanna”.

For For 50 years, the American choreographer has played a key role in the development of contemporary dance in France and also in Italy, where he created the Teatrodanza project at the Fenice in Venice. Confirming the bond with our country, in 2006 his work was awarded the first Golden Lion ever awarded to a choreographer by the Venice Biennale. After the masterclass in Udine, Carolyn Carlson will be an exceptional guest at the Biennale College Danza 2024.

At the Udine masterclass, which starts on June 20th, students from theater schools and academies as well as dance companies will take part, such as Arearea, Balletto Civile, the Dimitri Theater School of Verscio (Switzerland) and Nico Pepe itself.

Carlson’s bond with Friuli Venezia Giulia is special, because the dancers of the Compagnia Arearea left and trained with her, Roberto Cocconi, Marta Bevilacqua And Luca Zamparwho at different times worked and took part in his choreographic creations.

Claudio de Maglio, director of Nico Pepe, also met Carolyn Carlson in his training experience, transferring contemporary dance and movement techniques, organically intertwined with acting and theatrical improvisation, into the teaching project of the Udine Academy. The Nico Pepe International program will continue with the rich Safest program from 16 to 20 July, with the participation of theater schools from China, from Burkina Faso to Galicia, with observers arriving from the Republic of Congo.
