Presented this morning at the CDV headquarters in San Marco 1st City of Venice Gathering – Artù Chiggiato Trophyreserved for vintage, classic and IOR class yachts, organized by the Compagnia della Vela in collaboration with the AIVE (Associazione Italiana Vele d’Epoca), the technical collaboration of the Venice Boat Show and with the patronage of the CIM (Comité International de la Méditerranée) and the Municipality of Venice.

The event will be held from 21 to 23 June in the waters off the Lido of Venice.

All participants in the Gathering, thanks to Vela Spa and the Venice Boat Show, will be hosted inside the Venice Arsenal from Thursday 20 June until Wednesday 26 June, where the awards ceremony will take place at the end of Sunday’s regattas.

“This regatta wants to celebrate the memory of Artù Chiggiato and the importance he had both in Venetian maritime culture and for our club.” He explained the president of the Compagnia della Vela Giuseppe Duca. “Born in 1902, a Venetian naval designer from the 1920s to the 1960s, he was a member of our club until shortly after its foundation. Chiggiato, influenced by English and American design, created boats with shallow draft to allow navigation during the Second World War, where it was only possible to do so in the lagoon. Finally, my thoughts also go to my friend Giancarlo Lodigiani, president of the Italian Vintage Sailing Association until his untimely death in February, who wanted our club to return to the vintage boat circuit.”

“At the invitation of AIVE we thought of a sports competition – explained the advisor responsible for the regatta Dario Perini – therefore three windward leeward regattas will take place and on Saturday a coastal regatta in the waters off the port of Venice, with a turning point and return between the harbor inlets. This is an important stage for shipowners because it competes in the AIVE Adriatic Cup.”

Registrations still open, but among those participating we note the presence of two Navy vessels: the wooden gaff cutter “Sorella”, built in 1858 by the English shipyard Dan Hatcher of Southampton, the oldest unit in service in the fleet and “ Sagittario”, the 1970 mahogany laminated cutter designed by Carlo Sciarelli, who took part in the OSTAR (Original Singlehanded Transatlantic Race) in 1972.
