PORDENONE – It is a constant alarm that now rings at any time of the year, but in this season the ringing is decidedly more significant. We are talking about thearrival of migrants from the eastern routethe now known one Balkan route. Despite the Schengen blockade, the numbers of migrants crossing from Slovenia to Italy continue to rise and the first effects (the risk is that they will not be the last) are also starting to be seen in Pordenone where several new migrants who have crossed the Italian-Slovenian border have stopped and arrived directly in the province of Pordenone, where evidently there are others who directed them. From what has been learned in recent weeks, there were at least thirty migrants who passed through the city. Some stopped, while others, after a day or two of rest, resumed their journey.

THE NUMBERS

«The numbers certify that the urgency has moved from the Mediterranean to land, we need men and Slovenia’s collaboration. The data collected by Frontex regarding irregular border crossings of the European Union in the first five months of 2024 are merciless: arrivals from the central Mediterranean have more than halved, the numbers on the eastern border have even doubled. We note that, now, the emergency is the land front to the East and that, even in our territory, we need garrisons at the borders and an agreement made with Croatia and Slovenia to stem flows that are becoming an exodus.”

THE PERCEPTION

As Roberto Novelli, regional councilor of Forza Italiacommenting on “data that confirm how correct the perception of public opinion is regarding the issues of migrants and security. The boom of the Right in the European elections is linked to immigration that takes on the features of an invasion, now out of control and to which the left opposes a hypocritical and mellifluous narrative that induces even moderate people to move towards radical positions. Problems related to immigration are widespread and require a unitary solution. But border territories need adequate tools to handle potentially explosive material.”

THE CONTROLS

In any case, as requested by the League and in detail by the regional secretary Marco Dreosto and by the councilor for security, Pierpaolo Roberti, minister Piantedosi has granted another six months of border controls with the suspension of Schengen to try to mitigate the effects of the passages, even if actually the main exodus is not from the asphalt roads, but from the mountain passes. In any case, the officers are authorized to stop anyone, even with the risk that during the most significant period of holidaymaker traffic, even longer queues than usual could be created.

Balkan route: checks increased for terrorism risk. Flows down 50%, but spring unknown

THE MOTION

«I will make a motion – concludes councilor Novelli – to underline how the issue of migrants is deeply felt in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Net of the official numbers, the abundance of flows is there for all to see and leads to a worsening of the living conditions for our citizens, problems of public order and security. Degradation produces very dangerous effects and leads to the abandonment of entire neighborhoods of our cities: the vote in the European elections is a cry of pain that must be heard and understood by everyone.”
