An exhibition on Santa Rosalia was inaugurated in Agrigento last June 12th. The exhibition space will be hosted by the church of San Lorenzo – Mudia exhibition center, while the inauguration will take place in the church of Santa Rosalia in via Atenea.

The exhibition entitled “Rosalia, cult and devotion in the Agrigento area” will feature archival documents, printed texts, paintings, sculptures, jewellery, silver and other precious artefacts, and also offers an overall view of the cities and churches who had and still have a strong devotion towards the “santuzza”.

The central part of the exhibition will be dedicated to the three communities closely linked to the cult of Rosalia: Bivona, Racalmuto and Santo Stefano Quisquina. A canvas from the Mother Church of Santo Stefano Quisquina is on display (above the statue of San Giordano). A canvas from 1464 which reproduces the three protectors of the town: S. Stefano protomartyr, the Madonna della Catena, and S. Rosalia with a rose in her hand and a diadem of roses on her head. It has currently been replaced with a copy.

The exhibition itinerary will be dynamic since the works on display are goods for worship and will return to the communities of origin, even during the exhibition, on the occasion of the liturgical holiday of 4 September, leaving room for other works coming from other communities of the Diocese. To enrich everything, a map of the province that will help identify the presence of churches, chapels and relics in the area and a video will project the visitor into the three places which, according to tradition, saw the historical presence of Santa Rosalia.

The organization is managed by the Museum, the Archive and the Library, cultural institutes for the pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Agrigento, with the collaboration of the parish communities involved. It will be possible to visit it until August 25th.
