LATINA – Palazzo Key, the iconic skyscraper confiscated by the judiciary, is destined for demolition. The decision was taken by the productive activities service of the Municipality of Latina, following a definitive ruling by the Supreme Court which concluded a long criminal trial linked to a simulated sale affair. Although the statute of limitations saved all the defendants, the building remains at the center of a demolition order.

The ordinance, announced previously by the mayor of Latina, Matilde Celentano, and formalized by the manager Paolo Cestra, orders the judicial custodian, the person responsible for the abuse and the owner to proceed with the demolition or removal of the illegally constructed works within 90 days of date of notification of the provision. This action must be carried out without prejudice to criminal sanctions, making the building compliant with urban planning and building regulations and the latest legitimating title.

The text of the ordinance clearly specifies: “If the person responsible for the abuse does not provide for the demolition and restoration of the state of the places within ninety days of the injunction, the property and the land area, as well as that necessary, according to the current urban planning regulations, for the construction of works similar to illegal ones, are acquired by right free of charge to the assets of the Municipality”.

In practice, if the required actions are not taken within three months, the Municipality itself will proceed with the demolition. Subsequently, the Municipality will retaliate against the person responsible for the abuse, charging him with the costs incurred for the intervention.

This ordinance represents a decisive step towards the restoration of urban planning legality and a clear demonstration of the local authorities’ commitment to combating building abuse. The Palazzo Key affair thus becomes an emblematic case of how institutions can intervene to restore order and ensure compliance with current regulations.
