Tram in Brescia, the center-right is thinking of a referendum for the next lines

Now the first tram line cannot be stopped, but a popular consultation is needed on T3 and T4. The centre-right in the Loggia expresses concern about the prospect of twenty-year construction sites clogging up the city streets: «People must be heard about the next mobility projects. I don’t mind the idea of a referendum, let’s involve the inhabitants in the debate on the future of Brescia. We are convinced that these works do not solve the problem of traffic entering the city” declares the coalition leader Fabio Rolfi.

The public transport hub requires investments beyond the city borders to reduce the flow of 200 thousand cars that enter the city every day. This is the position of the minority that emerged in the public meeting with the expert Giorgio Schiffer, former president of Brescia Trasporti who launches the idea: «We need to go beyond the council of mayors and create the council of institutions, a body in which the highest exponents of the municipality, the province and the region are represented». In addition to the new political body, there is a need for other institutional entities to join Brescia Mobilità. «Brescia Mobilità should also become a subsidiary of the province and the Lombardy region. This would give greater strength when requests for funding for new infrastructures are made and greater effectiveness in traffic remodulation actions. We are in a phase in which somewhat dirigiste choices are needed” adds Schiffer.

Regarding the definitive project of the T2 tram line, the expert has few doubts: «Given that the money is there, the tram project must be approved without controversy» underlines the former president of Brescia Trasporti.
The project is good but pay attention to the possible problems caused by construction sites, Schiffer warns about via Mazzini, via San Martino della Battaglia, via Sostegno and via Volturno. And then the major interventions beyond the urban borders: the extension of the metro to Concesio is economically sustainable since according to the expert the expense would be 100 million euros. «We need to bring the subway north and create a large parking lot in Concesio» says Rolfi. The president emeritus of Brescia Trasporti observes with interest the extension of the metro line up to Rezzato since «it would cost 150 million euros, compared to a 3 kilometer route, a large interchange car park would have to be built in Rezzato» proposes Schiffer. In short, the future of sustainable mobility for the center-right travels beyond urban borders.
