Crotone, a small tour in the footsteps of Gaele Covelli

It is a lagoon that bears the name of the painter from Crotone Gaele Covellithe realist painter who brought prestige to his land.

Baptized with the name of Gian Emanuele, was born in Crotone in Via Suriano (Fish Market Section) on 28 May 1872 to Leonardo, a merchant, and Giuseppina De Filippis, daughter of artisans. Right near via Suriano, between viale Regina Margherita and Piazza Umberto I, the piazza was named after the painter from Crotone.

Nearby is his house, and also a canvas of the Madonna of Capo Colonna that he painted when he was very young. In fact, he showed an inclination towards art from an early age, drawing sketches depicting the Madonna del Capo on the walls of the city.

Piazza Sant’Angelo, inside the fish market [GUARDA QUI]is located in the birthplace of the painter from Crotone Gaele Covelli and houses a youthful painting of the Madonna di Capo Colonna, in the Oblio room.

Much appreciated in Italy, many works by Gaele Covelli are exhibited at the Casa della Cultura in Crotone, in via Vittorio Emanuelewhile there is also a virtual exhibition promoted by the Department of Culture and the “Armando Lucifero” Municipal Library.
