Once again, a serious episode of violence shakes the Sicilian prison system: in Ragusa, two prison officers were injured by a foreign prisoner who, simulating a suicide attempt by hanging, lured them into the cell and then attacked them with an object of sharp plastic.

“It is an unacceptable and unsustainable situation”, denounce the general secretary of the Public Function of the CGIL Sicily, Gaetano Agliozzo, and the secretary of FP Ragusa, Nunzio Fernandez. “Immediate and incisive intervention is needed to protect the health and lives of the prison officers who guarantee safety in prisons every day”.

The FP Cgil Sicilia asks the Department of Penitentiary Administration to plan urgent measures to: strengthen Penitentiary Police personnel, starting from the Sicilian prisons, which are seriously undersized; guarantee adequate training and equipment for officers and, at the same time, improve detention conditions, reducing overcrowding and ensuring more humane treatment of prisoners.

“We can no longer wait for another tragedy to occur,” conclude Agliozzo and Fernandez. “A concrete commitment is needed from all institutions to guarantee safety in prisons and the right to work of prison officers”.
