A prisoner attempted to escape from Bari prison, but took a wrong turn and arrived at the management offices, where he was blocked. It might seem like a joke, but it is not, as underlined by Sappe general secretary Federico Pilagatti, who made what happened known.

“Fortunately it ended well, but if the prisoner had managed to escape and had hurt some citizens, who would have paid the consequences?” asked the trade unionist. “Perhaps a case would have been opened against the policemen as well as the prison management for failing to guarantee the security of the penitentiary, which is seriously understaffed, and for having distracted the policeman from his duty,” he continued.
“The autonomous penitentiary police union believes that a case should be opened against those who manage the health service within the Bari prison, in which, despite the fact that around seventy units are employed (including doctors, specialists, technicians, ) precise rules would be violated on many occasions which provide for the release of prisoners from prison to hospital facilities only in the presence of serious danger for the prisoners”, he said.
Sappe “hopes that the attempted escape will open the eyes of those responsible, the criminal and surveillance judiciary, since these critical events create social alarm”. “The prison police – concluded Pilagatti – is no longer willing to act as a sacrificial lamb for the responsibilities of others”.
