Pisa, 14 June 2024 – The relay marathon announced by the Union of Italian Criminal Chambers and organized by the management of the Pisa criminal chamber took place on 12 June. THE INITIATIVE – The aim of this initiative was to give a voice to prisoners, “those who cannot speak”, and denounce the disastrous situation of the prison and the Italian penitentiary system. There were numerous and heartfelt interventions from all the participants: many lawyers registered with the Pisa CP, the President of the COA of Pisa and some councilors, the guarantor of people deprived of liberty of the Municipality of Pisa. Among those present in the square to listen and convey his greetings was also the Mayor of Pisa Michele Conti. Particularly significant interventions were that of Prof. Tullio Padovani, a member of the Pisa CP, who has always been at the forefront on the prison front, also as honorary president of “Nessuno Tocchi Caino”, and that of Prof. Benedetta Galgani, associate of criminal procedural law at the University of Pisa. The testimonies of the leaders of the “Contro Luce” and “Casa della Donna” associations are evocative, bringing direct experiences alongside the inmates of the Pisa prison. The testimonies of former prisoners and healthcare workers from prison facilities are moving. The words of the young criminal lawyers of the CP of Pisa are exciting, many of them and on the front line. Numerous and attentive Pisan citizens stopped to listen to the speakers and ask questions. “The event was a moment of intense reflection and discussion on a particularly complex topic, that of penitentiary reality, and the aim was achieved because it was dedicated to ordinary people. We took to the streets in our shirtsleeves – comments the board of directors – to talk to the citizens because those 40 inmates who have taken their lives in prison since the beginning of this year are people like them, with a name and surname that often it is not even remembered. When reporting the news, the mass media often identify prisoners who have taken their own lives with the nomen iuris of the crime or with their ethnicity; they are people who died of prison, of loneliness, of deprivation, of lack of prospects, of lack of assistance, of lack of care. And these deaths weigh on the consciences of our politicians, of our legislators as well as on ours, as lawyers but first and foremost as citizens.” During the evening the participants were also able to listen to comments on the songs dedicated to the lawyer’s prison.
