WILD BOARS, COLDIRETTI CUNEO: A CHANGE OF PACE IS NECESSARY TO PRESERVE THE ECONOMY OF THE CUNEE AREA AND THE SAFETY OF THE CITIZENS
It is necessary to immediately activate all measures, including extraordinary ones, to support pig farms in the area
It is urgent to strengthen the action to contain the presence of wild boars, with a change of pace that must necessarily go beyond the approval of the Urgent Intervention Plan, through the definition of the provisions that allow its effective implementation. The presence of African swine fever, the continuous damage caused to agricultural production and the risk in terms of public safety, attributable to the high number of animals present in the Cuneo area, certainly cannot be considered emergencies and problems that have been overcome. This is what Coldiretti Cuneo comments in light of the situation which sees an increase in cases of swine fever and the number of road accidents, such as the latest death of a motorcyclist caused by a wild boar crossing in the capital.
“The eradication activity must be further strengthened by implementing all the measures, including extraordinary ones, envisaged by the PRIU, such as the possibility of interventions in self-defence by the agricultural entrepreneur also in Protected Areas – states Enrico Nada, President of Coldiretti Cuneo – , it is essential to give continuity to the previous measures and urgently implement the new ones. We remind you that the entire sector and the Cuneo pig production chain are at risk, which includes around 800 companies and almost 900,000 animals destined above all for the protected circuits of the main Italian PDOs for the preparation of the best national delicatessen, such as Parma ham and San Daniel.”
“Since companies have invested to adapt in terms of biosecurity, it is absolutely necessary to preserve the 3 pig districts identified in Piedmont, one of which includes 21 municipalities in the Cuneo area, within which there cannot be wild boars within a 15 kilometer radius. For this reason – highlights Fabiano Porcu, Director of Coldiretti Cuneo -, the Region must commit to implementing all the necessary actions for the total removal of wild boars, involving all the relevant bodies, including the Parks. It is an urgent problem, for which there is no more time to waste and which must be among the priorities of the new regional council as soon as it takes office”.
