Romano di Lombardia (Bergamo), 23 June 2024 – The polls on 8 and 9 June for the election of next mayor of the municipality Bergamo have not given a clear answer and without a majority the citizens will be called back to the polls this weekend: the mayoral candidates who reached the final ballot are Gianfranco Gafforelli and Paola Suardi, who received more preferences than Mario Suardi and Luca Maria Valcarenghi stopped respectively at 12.53 % et al 2.88%.
Who are the mayoral candidates and who supports them
Gianfranco Gafforelli71 years old, is the centre-right candidate for mayor and his name is already known for having held the position of president of the province. His candidacy was accompanied by controversies as the former president, who lives in Calcinate, had to face the blunt refusal of Brothers of Italy to his name as a candidate for mayor. Once the internal struggles were resolved, Gafforelli presented himself supported by the list Forza Italia – We moderates – PPE – Romano civica, Brothers of Italy and the League, reaching the 44.47% in the first round of elections.
It’s a very tense head-to-head between Gafforelli and the challenger Paola Suardi, which on 8 and 9 June reached the 40.12%: 45-year-old employee and municipal councilor in the previous council (the outgoing mayor is Sebastian Nicoli), Suardi is supported by the list Paola Suardi mayor and PD. The clash between the two was not only at the polls but also on social media where Gafforelli and Suardi are pricked especially regarding Mario Suardi’s choice to support Gafforelli’s candidacy despite the fact that this was seen by the center-left as a route change with respect to his declarations: “In this agreement between Gianfranco Gafforelli and Mario Suardi, unfortunately, there is no neither coherence nor respect for the voters” wrote Paola Suardi on Facebook.
When and how to vote
The citizens of Roman of Lombardy will have the opportunity to vote Sunday 23 June 2024 from 7:00 to 23:00 and Monday 24 June 2024 from 7:00 to 15:00. Voters who have lost their electoral card or whose ballot has no space left for certifying their vote can request, even by proxy, the release of a new card from the URP Demographic Services even in the days preceding the vote and in extraordinary route also on Saturday 22 June 2024 from 9:00 to 18:00, Sunday 23 June 2024 from 7:00 to 23:00 and Monday 24 June from 7:00 to 15:00.
